Top FAA Official, Randy Babbitt, Steps Down Following DWI Arrest

It didn’t take long for the Federal Aviation Administration to take down the web page of its Administrator - well, former Administrator - Randy Babbitt.

Babbitt was arrested on December 5, 2011 after he drove on the wrong side of the road. The story is here.

Babbitt , a former pilot, was the top aviation safety official in the United States. He quickly resigned so as not to bring further discredit to the FAA.

Babbitt is not the driver in the video below, however it does depict unsafe driving.

Utah Mayor DUI

Ever hear of Helper, Utah? Neither had we. Helper has a population of a couple thousand people and is located in central Utah. Oh, the Mayor of Helper, Dean Armstrong, was recently arrested for DUI.

The story is here and here.

The arrest occurred at 1:00 in the afternoon after Armstrong was seen making a rolling stop at a stop sign. He was pulled over and performed unsatisfactorily at a field sobriety test. His blood alcohol level was also alleged to be at an unlawful level.

Tennessee State Representative Todd Arrested for DUI and Gun Charges

It was almost 11:00 p.m. on October 11th when the Nashville police officer observed a SUV speeding and driving erratically−the usual indication of drunk driving. Sure enough, after he pulled the SUV over and approached, the officer smelled alcohol.

The driver was arrested after a field sobriety test. To make matters more interesting a loaded pistol was found in the car. Now for the kicker: the driver was Tennessee State Representative Curry Todd. The story concerning his arrest for DUI and gun possession is here. For his part, Todd recently apologized to his family and supporters for his conduct.

As any longtime reader of the Drunk Politician Blog knows, we are nonpartisan here. It turns out that Todd is a Republican. But no political party has a monopoly on alcohol abuse and addiction problems. Alcohol welcomes both Democrats and Republicans, liberal and conservative. The irony here is that Todd is a proponent of allowing bar patrons to bring their guns into nightclubs. Todd is considering a plea bargain. See here.

Ohio Councilman Charged With DUI Will Resign

Last Sunday a councilman from Morrow, Ohio was observed by police following a vehicle too closely. When he was pulled over an open container of booze was found in his car. He was eventually charged with DUI. The story is here.

This is not the first arrest for Josh Chambers. Last year he brandished a knife and was charged with menace. He apparently told the Mayor that he will resign.

San Jose, CA Councilman Enters Guilty Plea on DUI Charge

Just to prove that we are impartial here at the Drunk Politician Blog, this week’s post is about Democrat San Jose Councilman, Ash Kalra (our last blog concerned a drunk driving Republican). Kalra just pleaded guilty to DUI. See here. We always wish them the best in their efforts to rebound and never let this happen again.

Last month, in May, Kalra was pulled over and arrested for DUI with a reported blood alcohol level of about 0.12. An 0.08 is the legal limit. Report on the initial story can be found here.

Kalra quickly ‘fessed up and yesterday entered a plea of guilty. He was fined $2,000, given probation, ordered to attend counseling, and to work five days of community service.

Like we have said many times before - Alcohol is impartial, too. It loves politicians from all political parties. Unfortunatley, alcohol abuse and addiction problems may result from alcohol consumption.

Idaho State Senator John McGee arrested for DUI and Felony Grand Theft

Alcohol does not discriminate. It treats all who drink it equally. And people from all walks of life, of all races, and from both sexes, love to drink it. The big and the small, the rich and the poor, the religious and non-religious, the pretty and the ugly, the flashy and the plain, the introvert and the extrovert , the powerful and the weak, Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, communists, socialists and capitalists, – all groups have members who have consumed alcohol, and all groups have members who have abused alcohol.

The latest member of politicians who now must face the consequences for overindulgence is Idaho State Senator, John McGee, a Republican. We are bi-partisan at the Drunk Politician Blog, and this is no attack on Republicans. It is simply notice that anyone can drink too much and suffer the consequences.

In the case of the 38-year-old McGee, it appears that after having too much to drink, he was arrested for misdemeanor drunk driving with a blood alcohol level almost twice over the legal limit. To make matters worse, it was not his car he was driving - it was a car he had apparently stolen while in a drunken stupor! Add felony grand theft auto to his charges.

The story is here, here, and an update is here.

Rhode Island House Minority Leader Arrested For DUI and Pot

There are 3,428 people in Rhode Island who may legally use medical marijuana under the state’s medical-marijuana program. Rhode Island House Minority Leader, Robert W. A Watson, is not one of them. That’s a problem, because he was arrested last week on suspicion of DUI and for having a baggie of pot in his car. The story is here.

Yes – innocent until proven guilty. And Watson denies he was DUI, though police claim he was impaired. Interestingly, in 2000, Watson was convicted of DUI in New Hampshire. That story is here.

Mississippi Mayor Guilty of DUI

Last December, the Mayor of Raleigh apparently had a little whiskey before he got behind the wheel of his car– okay, a lot – and he and was arrested for careless driving. Recently he was found guilty of DUI and ordered to pay more than $1,800 and sentenced to two days in jail. The story is here.

The arrest back in December was carried out by former Police Chief David Stringer. The interesting thing is that Stringer was fired in January. What’s that all about?

Where the Heck is Eufaula?

Do you know where Eufaula is? Neither did I, so here’s a map.

Ya, so? Nothing really, just that the Mayor of Eufaula, Robert Dean Smith was recently arrested for allegedly violating his probation stemming from his 2008 DUI. At that time he pled guilty to DUI, having an open booze container in his car and for a traffic violation.

The story is here and here among other places.

The Mayor is also accused of using a city credit card to buy gasoline – felony embezzlement – unrelated to his drinking problem. Or is it?
